Move from Fly.io and stop managing machines

On Fly you size and place machines yourself. On velixir you push source and it's built, autoscaled and kept up for you, in the EU. Most apps move with no code changes.

  1. 1

    Deploy your code

velixir detects the language and builds your source, no Dockerfile needed. It's live on its velixir.run address in about a minute. Listen on 0.0.0.0 on the port in PORT; a Procfile's web line is the start command. velixir builds from your source and doesn't use your Dockerfile; listen on PORT rather than the internal_port in fly.toml.

    velixir init
    velixir deploy
  2. 2

    Bring your variables

Fly never shows a secret's value again once it's set, so take them from wherever you keep them (your local .env, a password manager), plus the [env] section of fly.toml. Leave out the database and Redis URLs: bind a velixir database and cache and they set DATABASE_URL and REDIS_URL for you. Moving is a good moment to rotate your keys, so paste fresh ones where you can.

    velixir env import .env --secret
  3. 3

    Copy your Postgres data

Open a tunnel to your Fly Postgres app and dump through it. Create a Postgres database on velixir, restore into it using the external connection string, then bind it to your app.

    fly proxy 15432:5432 -a <your-db-app>
    pg_dump -Fc --no-acl --no-owner "postgres://postgres:<password>@localhost:15432/<db>" > latest.dump
    velixir db connect <database-id> --external
    pg_restore --no-owner --no-acl -d "<external connection string>" latest.dump
  4. 4

    Switch the domain

Add your domain on the app's Domains tab and point DNS at velixir. Keep the old service running until DNS has moved over.

What works differently

  • •Machines and regions: there's nothing to place. Set a minimum and maximum instance count and velixir scales on CPU.
  • •A Dockerfile isn't used. If yours installs extra system packages, open a ticket and we'll help.
  • •Process groups: run each one as its own velixir app from the same source.

Stuck on something Fly.io-specific? Open a ticket from your dashboard and we'll help you move it.

The switching offer

We'll cover your hosting bill for 3 months.

Move your app, show us your last invoice from the host you're leaving, and we match it as velixir credit: up to €50 a month, for your first 3 months.

  • ✓ Credit arrives monthly while your app is live and serving visitors.
  • ✓ A card on file is needed to claim. It isn't charged for the offer.
  • ✓ One claim per team. Credit can't be cashed out or refunded.
Claim your credit

For the first 100 teams. We may close the offer at any time; claims already made are honoured.
