All hosts Moving from Azure App Service

Move from Azure App Service, without the portal

No plans, resource groups or slots to set up first. Push your source, .NET from Core 1.0 to .NET 10 or any other language, and it's live in the EU in about a minute.

  1. 1

    Deploy your code

velixir detects the language and builds your source, no Dockerfile needed. It's live on its velixir.run address in about a minute. Listen on 0.0.0.0 on the port in PORT; a Procfile's web line is the start command.

    velixir init
    velixir deploy
  2. 2

    Bring your app settings

Pipe the JSON straight in; the import reads Azure's format. Skip the WEBSITE_ settings, which are Azure's own. Connection strings are listed separately: add each as a variable named the way your code reads it, such as ConnectionStrings__Default for .NET. Leave out the database and Redis URLs: bind a velixir database and cache and they set DATABASE_URL and REDIS_URL for you. Moving is a good moment to rotate your keys, so paste fresh ones where you can.

az webapp config appsettings list --name <app> --resource-group <group> | velixir env import - --secret
  3. 3

    Copy your Postgres data

Dump from Azure Database for PostgreSQL with SSL on. Create a Postgres database on velixir, restore into it using the external connection string, then bind it to your app. Moving from Azure SQL isn't covered: velixir's managed database is Postgres.

    pg_dump -Fc --no-acl --no-owner "host=<server>.postgres.database.azure.com dbname=<db> user=<user> sslmode=require" > latest.dump
    velixir db connect <database-id> --external
    pg_restore --no-owner --no-acl -d "<external connection string>" latest.dump
  4. 4

    Switch the domain

Add your domain on the app's Domains tab and point DNS at velixir. Keep the old service running until DNS has moved over.

What works differently

  • •Deployment slots: velixir has slots too, with a swap, so staging-then-swap carries over.
  • •WebJobs: run each as its own velixir app, or use a background service inside your app.
  • •Azure SQL and Cosmos DB aren't offered; velixir's managed database is Postgres.
